Biography
Ever curious and eager to think outside the box, they have built a wide and integrated repertoire encompassing the great classics in original and dazzling arrangements, as well as new works written specifically for Duo Fortin-Poirier; many by Quebec women composers, including (including Chronique d'une coupe à blanc by Vanessa Marcoux, Entre la veille et le sommeil by Maggie Ayotte and Dense by Julie Thériault).
Duo Fortin-Poirier performances are distinguished by a unique and personal approach to the concert form. Repertoire is built around a particular and resonant theme. From lighting effects to the incorporation of text, to an impressive four-handed choreography – projected live on a big screen – each piece is placed in its emotional and poetic context by a marriage of interlacing elements.
Amélie Fortin and Marie-Christine Poirier have, in fact, invented the “four-handed choreographic piano”; a discipline, inspired by synchronized swimming, in which gestures at the keyboard conspire to achieve visual, as well as musical, results..
Duo Fortin-Poirier has further distinguished itself in national and international competitions (including second prize at the Rome International Competition) and enjoys a career wreathed with awards, grants, and nominations. Most recently, the duo’s Nuit Blanche project garnered two Opus Award nominations (2023 and 2024).
The eponymous album , featuring exclusively contemporary pieces, was named one of CBC's Top 20 Classical Albums (2022). In addition to Nuit Blanche, Duo Fortin-Poirier has released Vingt doigts et un piano and Mémoires, plus several singles; all regularly broadcast on Espace Musique, Ici Radio-Canada, and C BC.
At the peak of their powers and still full of promise, Amélie and Marie-Christine continue to amaze and innovate. Their unique and refreshing approach has earned the duo an eminent place in today’s cultural landscape. Their music videos - created in close collaboration with talent from across the arts – further expand their reach.
